The Debt Management Program Overview brochure provides detailed information around the "default prevention" program from OSFA.  It also helps identify how to get started with the program at your school.

Navigating Your Financial Future is a free, comprehensive program for default prevention offered to all schools by the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA).  We target the student population in an effort to curb defaults on loans and assist borrowers with debt management.  Our program is a tool designed to help you offer comprehensive services and educational resources to your students so that they may manage student loan debt successfully.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance is one of the leaders among state guarantors in providing access to higher education for its citizens.  We are committed to making every effort to ensure that student borrowers have the skills, knowledge, and information to make informed decisions on how to avoid default status on their student loan obligations.  We recognize that providing high quality default prevention services will increase the likelihood of loan repayments and reduce the default rates of schools and lenders.

Objectives of the program:

  • Effective early intervention programs for a targeted group already at high-risk of current or future default behaviors.
  • Seminars that educate lenders on innovative default prevention techniques and strategies.
  • Identification of areas of improvement for the school and lender in the "entrance and exit" counseling processes that will ensure the student understands their borrower rights and responsibilities.
  • Comprehensive website for students, borrowers, and lenders.  Complete with default prevention resources, materials, and default management information.
  • Informational sessions to prepare financial aid directors and their staff on how to facilitate workshops on campus, initiate counseling strategies for high-risk borrowers and teach skills to students on overall financial literacy.
  • Assistance with the development of a specific "default management" plan for schools.
